HMS Cheerful was a C Class destroyer that sank on 30th June, 1917 when she hit a mine laid by German submarine UC-33, six miles SSE of Lerwick in the Shetlands Islands off the north coast of Scotland. Of the forty members of her crew who lost their lives, fourteen came from London. One of these was Edgar Hanks.
